Soumillon didn't know about Orfevre. He has a tendency to lug in on the home straight, and he loses motivation when whipped. It can be said that he lost because the trainer and owner changed from a Japanese jockey to Soumillon without communicating with him.

Best ever ? Not sure about that, 2nd and third in this race were rated 113 and 108, fodder to Frankel, no Brigadiers in there, he was kept in his comfort zone by Sir Henry, a truly brilliant trainer, had he took on a Mill reef, Dancing brave or sea the stars over 12F his winning streak would have ended. You cant compare a Queen Anne with an Arc or king George...also Sea the stars guineas was 2 seconds faster the Frankels, greatest race hmm dream on Frankelfiles..

Absolute FLUKE never run again ,wonder why??

Devastating turn of foot in the money lane

Golden Cygnet was clearly coming to win his race but he never took off and consequently paid the ultimate price for it. As brilliant as Golden Cygnet undoubtedly was, the name of the game is jumping and that was something he didn't do on this occasion. It was a tragedy that deprived the racing world of such a prodigious talent. We will never know what he might have gone on to achieve but for coming to grief at that final hurdle.

Vincent O'brien and Lester piggott will always be the best since 1960

Brigadier Gerard and Frankel were brilliant milers and got ten furlongs, but in BG case he was beaten by a horse who stayed a mile and a half as evidenced by his Epsom Derby win. I don't think that BG would have beaten Roberto even if there were no excuses for why he was beaten here.

Quite a shame that we never got the chance to see Harbinger back up this great performance.

I'm sure everyone who enjoys racing has there own opinion on who the greatest Horse was in my era watching racing from the 80s to today ive never seen a Horse that would have lived with Dancing Brave , his acceleration was just unreal

I don't know how the stewards rulebook in Ireland or for Leopardstown reads as to what does or doesn't contitute in-race interference significant enough to alter the placings? What I would say however is that at this same meeting back in 2012, the Flaxman Stables owned/David Wachman trained filly Duntle won and minutes later was taken down as the winner of the G1 Matron Stakes for much less than I saw committed in this race by Golden Horn.

A really deep field at Leopardstown that day for this renewal of the Irish Champion Stakes. Rare to see such a loaded field with this kind of depth come together for a G1 race in Ireland, France, or the UK run at the10F/2000m or10-1/2F/2100m distance. Generally a field of this caliber only comes together for one of the big international G1's at 12F like the Arc, or the Japan Cup, or Dubai Sheema Classic, or Breeders Cup Turf, etc... No doubt, at least in my mind anyway, this Irish Champion Stakes field in 2016 rivaled the Arc field that ran at Chantilly just over a month later. Actually, a lot of these same horses that showed up for this race at Leopardstown were also in the field at Chantilly and contested the Arc as well. No question though, from tip to tale this field was as loaded as it gets and all the major stables and their top middle distance turf horses in Europe were all duely represented in this race.

Dont forget Christy roche outrode eddery in the derby on secreto every one said eddery ballsed it up dont think so watch the finish again 😊

A magnificent horse and a great Champion. I'd have to question the winning distance though, it didn't quite look like 6 lengths to me. A fantastic win regardless.

Was crazy that Golden Horn went off around 9/2, 5/1 on UK markets. Not many arcs run on good to firm but suited Golden Horn down to a T and of course great tactical ride by Frankie. Found won next years Arc so I’d say an above average Arc field.

I was 18 in 1965,and took the day off work to go to the Derby. I'd always loved horseracing and appreciated the skills of trainers and jockeys. So having read Peter O'Sullevan's opinion of Sea Bird, decided to go and see the race. I had no money in those days and didn't back Sea Bird at 7/4, instead put 10 shillings e/w on Meadow Court. I'd been lucky and had backed Niksar to win the 2000 Gns, so was relaxed and looked forward to the race. However, once I saw Sea Bird canter to the start, I knew he was something different ! People talk about great horses like Mill Reef, Nijinsky, Frankel etc, great and wonderful animals. But Sea Bird was different, Pat Glennon sat quietly on him cruising, but when he let him run, his action was unbelievable, the elasticity of a greyhound in full flight, he flew into the lead effortlessly and Glennon was pulling him 50 yards before the post. I've always felt Sea Bird was a freak, but I'll never forget him or his annihilation of a fantastic field in the Arc.

I remember Shergar very well what a great horse and to those people who murdered him hope they got their comeuppance RIP 🙏 beautiful horse Shergar 😢🎉❤

Wasn’t Balmerinos regular jockey the horse didn’t race like this normally the jockey got 2 far back u r never going 2 catch the Great Lester Piggot from there but if normal jockey Maurice Campbell had been on the horse I believe it would of been a different story in NZ this horse won everything a Champion World Class

There is no doubt that Ribot and Sea Bird were the 2 best horses I have ever seen I would still fancy Sea Bird but what a race you would travel along way to watch it
